In Pakistan over 97% of the population is Muslim. Marriages are legal union between the bride and groom. As per Pakistani civil law polygyny(Man having multiple wifes) is permitted but not polyandry (Women having multiple husbands).
Though love marriages are slowly becoming popular, arranged marriages are still prevalent and are an integral part of Pakistani society. Marriages are often arranged within the family or within the same community or ethnicity. Online dating portals, Pakistan matrimonial websites and marriage bureaus are becoming more popular in Pakistan to find their life partners.

Though the wedding customs and celebrations differ significantly across the regions, the three main customs are Henna ceremony (Rasme Henna), the vows or the Nikah which is a part of the actual wedding or Shaadi ceremony, and Walima. Common ceremonies include Proposal, Engagement (Mangni), The Dholki or Dholak, Maayun, Mehndi, Barat, Arsi Mashaf and Rukhsati.

The nikah is one of the unique ceremony in Islamic marriages, the contract ceremony. It either takes place at the Shaadi itself or on a separate day at the bride's house, before the shaadi event.It is performed by an imam which formally indicates signing of the marriage contract. The bride and groom must both have two witnesses present to ensure that the marriage is consensual.
